Barcode Format Guide

Choosing the right barcode format depends on your industry and use case. SafeKit supports all major 1D barcode standards used worldwide — from retail product packaging to pharmaceutical labeling and warehouse logistics.

Code 128

📦 General purpose, shipping, inventory

Supports all 128 ASCII characters. The most versatile barcode for internal labeling, parcel tracking, and supply chain.

EAN-13

📦 Retail products worldwide

The global retail standard — found on virtually every product in stores outside North America. Requires 12 digits; check digit is auto-calculated.

UPC-A

📦 Retail products in US & Canada

The North American retail standard with 12 digits. Required by major US retailers including Walmart, Target, and Amazon FBA.

Code 39

📦 Automotive, defense, government

An older, widely supported format that encodes uppercase letters and digits. Still used heavily in defense and automotive industries.

ITF-14

📦 Shipping cartons, outer packaging

Used on corrugated cardboard boxes and pallets. Encodes a 14-digit GTIN for carton-level tracking in the supply chain.

EAN-8

📦 Small packages and labels

A compact 8-digit variant of EAN-13 for tiny packaging where a full EAN-13 won't fit. Requires a special registration number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which barcode format should I use for my product?+

For retail products sold globally, use EAN-13. For US/Canada-only retail, use UPC-A. For internal inventory, shipping labels, or custom applications, Code128 is the most flexible choice.

How do I get a barcode for my product to sell on Amazon?+

Amazon requires a GTIN (Global Trade Item Number), typically as a UPC or EAN. You need to purchase a GS1 company prefix from GS1 (gs1.org) to get official retail barcodes. SafeKit generates the barcode image once you have your number.

Can I generate a barcode without a watermark?+

Yes. SafeKit generates clean, professional barcodes with no watermark. Download as PNG for digital use or SVG for print and professional applications.

What size should my barcode be for printing?+

The minimum size for reliable scanning is 1 inch (25mm) wide. Download as SVG for infinitely scalable, print-ready barcodes. For standard retail, EAN-13 barcodes should be 37.29mm × 26.26mm at 100% magnification.

Is the barcode data kept private?+

Yes. All barcode generation runs entirely in your browser. No barcode data, product information, or files are sent to any server.
